That was my major in undergraduate school, while I changed to material science (ceramics and metals) in grad school. I don't know of any books in particular that relate to cars, but I've been designing ceramic turbines and 3D Carbon-carbon ceramic coated turbines...trying to at least... they have their advantages and, of course, their disadvantages (easy of manufacturing, reliability, and cost depending on material). I think the best general book you could get is called "Ceramics and Glasses, Volume 4" of the Engineered Materials Handbook Series (the big orange books). Let me know if you want to help me make some better turbos! :)
